Introducing RELIANT FRAXEL® Laser Treatment

Repairing aging and sun-damaged skin – pixel by pixel, spot by spot

With today’s emphasis on active, healthy lifestyles, most men and women feel a lot younger than they look. Aging and sun-damaged skin, wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, and brown spots often mask their inner beauty. Fortunately, there is a new aesthetic laser solution that provides a fresh chance to turn back the clock on aging.

Upstate Plastic Surgery is pleased to be one of the earliest plastic surgery practices in the world to offer Fraxel Laser Treatment. Drs. Keller, Lovett and Blakemore offer the breakthrough Fraxel Laser Treatment which was developed by Reliant Technologies in conjunction with the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, the developers of the novel concept of "fractional" laser therapy. Fraxel Laser Treatment can be used to improve conditions present in superficial and deeper layers of the skin. FDA-cleared indications include: skin resurfacing; treatment of wrinkles around the eyes; and treatment of pigmented lesions, such as age spots, sun spots, melasma, treatment of scars resulting from acne, surgery, trauma, and stretch marks. After Fraxel Laser Treatment, skin generally feels softer, looks smoother and tighter, and pores are usually smaller.

To appreciate the benefits of Fraxel Laser Treatment, think of a family portrait or digital photograph in need of high-quality restoration or touch-up. Just as a damaged painting is delicately restored one area at a time, or a photographic image is altered, pixel by pixel, the Fraxel laser improves your appearance by affecting only a fraction of your skin at a time with thousands of microscopic laser spots. It’s like digital photo-editing software for your skin!

"The unique ‘fractional’ approach is a huge step forward in providing significant cosmetic results with minimal downtime," says Dr. Blakemore. "This advanced treatment is the first cosmetic laser to provide an effective, gradual procedure that creates new healthy tissue by stimulating the body to naturally repair aging and photo-damaged skin without significant risks or recovery time."

Fraxel Laser Treatment can be performed in our office using topical anesthesia. Treatment takes about 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area(s) being treated. Because the procedure does not "ablate" or remove the outer skin layer, patients can resume routine activities right after treatment. Swelling is minimal and generally resolves in about 2 days. The skin will have a pinkish tone for 5 to 7 days.

For optimal improvement, a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart has been shown to be most effective. Results are both immediate and progressive, with noticeable, beneficial effects accumulating over 1 to 3 months.

Laser Facial
The Intense Pulsed Light Laser (IPL) corrects a variety of benign skin conditions, such as, facial skin imperfections, birthmarks, brown spots, and unsightly small veins. This is also known as a photorejuvenation treatment. Your IPL treatments will result in smoother skin with a more even tone and color. Most vessels and spots will fade and disappear. There is no “down time” involved. Mild redness is present initially in some patients, but color returns to normal by the next day. IPL is a safe, noninvasive solution to improving your skin long term that can be tailored to your individual skin condition and type.

Vascular Laser
The vascular laser is used to treat unwanted blood vessels that can discolor the skin. The face and neck are most commonly treated and the laser will correct congenital problems, such as port wine stains, and acquired problems such as spider veins from sun damage and rosacea. There is temporary bruising after the procedure and several treatments may be required to eliminate large lesions.

Vascular Lesions
Excellent results can be obtained when treating vascular lesions such as port wine stains, rosacea and facial spider veins. Large lesions may require multiple treatments, but the bruising is short lived and the treatment is minimally painful. Spider veins on the legs can be treated, but recovery is usually more prolonged than in the face. Because of a variety of drawbacks associated with the laser in this application, we recommend injection sclerotherapy.

Facial Resurfacing
A number of lasers are available for facial resurfacing to eliminate fine wrinkles and pigment changes in the skin related to aging. These are deep peels that require anesthesia and approximately 10 days of recovery prior to returning to work. Remarkable results can be obtained with full face resurfacing or the laser can be used as an adjunct to other procedures such as a facelift. Resurfacing can also be done for acne scarring, but is only appropriate in small percentage of these patients who do not have deep scars.

Hair Removal Laser
Permanent hair removal is now possible for all skin types. Upstate Skin Care Center and Spa now has the Light Sheer diode laser which can treat numerous dark hair follicles simultaneously. This laser provides more reliable results and has less discomfort than other hair removal methods. It also has a special contact-cooling handpiece that protects and cools the skin during your treatment. During your initial consultation our nurse will determine your skin type and evaluate the desired hair to be treated. An estimate of the number of treatments required for the desired result will also be given. More information is also available on www.skinandhealth.com.
